Valmiki describes Maricha's deer as golden, with silver spots and horns tipped with gems. Lakshmana suspected at once that it was Maricha in disguise.
Sita saw the deer near the hut and asked Rama to catch it for her. Rama left Lakshmana to guard her and followed it. When Rama's arrow struck it, Maricha cried out in Rama's voice to draw Lakshmana away too.
